Why Everything Feels Like Too Much (What Your Body May Be Trying to Tell You)
Jul 09, 2026Have you ever looked at your to-do list and immediately felt exhausted? Not because there were a hundred things on it.
But because even five simple tasks somehow felt impossible.
Answering an email.
Cooking dinner.
Making a phone call.
Choosing what to eat.
Going to the grocery store.
Some days it can feel as though life has quietly become heavier than it used to be.
If you've found yourself wondering,
"Why can't I handle things like I used to?"
I want you to know you're not alone.
For many women in midlife, the answer isn't laziness, weakness, or a lack of discipline. From a wellness perspective, your body may simply be asking for something different.
Not more effort.
More support.
My Real Life Story
There was a season when even ordinary errands felt overwhelming.
As a wellness coach, I knew what healthy habits looked like. I understood nutrition, movement, and stress management.
Yet while caring for my mother-in-law with dementia, I slowly began losing the very routines that had once helped me feel grounded.
My days revolved around caring for someone else.
Somewhere along the way, I stopped caring for myself with the same gentleness. Nothing dramatic happened overnight.
Instead, it was hundreds of small moments.
Putting myself last.
Skipping meals.
Ignoring my own need for quiet.
Feeling responsible for everyone else's well-being. Eventually, even simple decisions felt mentally exhausting.
It wasn't because I had become incapable. It was because my mind and body had been carrying more than they were designed to carry alone.
Perhaps you've experienced something similar.
What We Often Think
When everything feels like too much, many of us immediately assume we need to become more productive.
Wake up earlier.
Try a new planner.
Drink more coffee.
Push harder.
Become more disciplined.
But what if the problem isn't that you're doing too little?
What if you've been doing too much for too long?
The Wellness Perspective
One of the most important lessons I've learned is this: Our bodies are always communicating with us.
Sometimes through energy.
Sometimes through sleep.
Sometimes through emotions.
And sometimes through overwhelm.
Feeling overwhelmed isn't always a sign that you're failing. It may be your nervous system asking for a different pace.
Your body isn't working against you. It's working for you. It's trying to protect you.
When your nervous system remains in a heightened state for weeks—or even years—ordinary life can begin to feel surprisingly difficult.
That's why even choosing what to cook for dinner can suddenly feel enormous. Not because dinner is difficult. Because your internal capacity has been stretched.
Why Healthy Habits Suddenly Feel So Hard
This is something I hear often.
"I know what I should be doing."
"I just can't seem to do it."
If that's you, please hear this:
Healthy habits don't disappear because you've lost motivation. They become harder when your mind and body are overwhelmed.
When you're mentally exhausted, your brain naturally looks for ways to conserve energy. That's why meal planning feels harder.
Exercise feels harder.
Cleaning feels harder.
Even making decisions can feel draining.
It's not that you've stopped caring about your health. Your body is simply prioritizing survival over optimization.
Understanding this changes everything. Instead of criticizing yourself, you begin offering yourself compassion.
Four Gentle Signs Your Body Needs More Than Rest
1. Everything Feels Urgent
Even small requests feel stressful.
Your brain struggles to distinguish between genuine emergencies and ordinary daily responsibilities.
Everything feels equally important.
2. You Can't Make Simple Decisions
You've probably stood in front of the refrigerator wondering what to eat.
Or scrolled through streaming services for twenty minutes without choosing anything.
Decision fatigue is real.
When your mind is overloaded, every choice requires more energy than it once did.
3. Rest Doesn't Feel Restful
You sleep.
You sit on the couch.
You watch television.
Yet somehow you still wake up feeling depleted.
Sometimes what you truly need isn't more inactivity.
You need emotional restoration.
Beauty.
Connection.
Joy.
Purpose.
Quiet.
4. You've Lost Interest in Things You Once Loved
One of the biggest clues for me was realizing I'd stopped making space for the things that once made me feel alive.
Reading.
Cooking creatively.
Learning French.
Playing my violin.
Walking without a destination.
Those weren't luxuries.
They were nourishment.
When you stop feeding your souls, life begins to feel much heavier than it really is.
Wellness Isn't About Doing More
This may sound surprising coming from a wellness coach. But wellness isn't another task to add to your planner.
It's the foundation that makes everything else feel more manageable. Sometimes wellness looks like preparing a colorful meal.
Other days it looks like ordering takeout without guilt because you genuinely need rest.
Sometimes wellness is going for a walk.
Sometimes it's saying no.
Sometimes it's asking for help.
Healthy living isn't about perfection. It's about learning to work with your body instead of constantly pushing against it.
A Different Way to Think About Healthy Habits
For years maybe you were taught that healthy habits require willpower. I don't believe that's the whole story.
You see, the healthiest routines are often the gentlest ones.
A nourishing breakfast.
Five quiet minutes with tea before checking your phone.
Walking outside after dinner.
Reading a chapter of a good book.
Fresh herbs in your kitchen.
Opening the windows.
Lighting a candle.
Listening to beautiful music while preparing dinner.
These small rituals tell your nervous system, "You're safe."
And when your body begins feeling safe again, healthy habits become much easier to maintain.
Try This This Week
Instead of asking yourself,
"How do I fix my whole life?"
Ask,
"What is one thing that would make today feel just five percent lighter?"
Maybe it's taking a slower morning.
Buying fresh flowers.
Preparing a simple nourishing lunch.
Turning off notifications for an hour.
Calling a friend.
Stepping into the garden.
One small act of care often creates more change than one giant life overhaul.
What I Want You to Hear Today
If everything feels like too much right now, please don't assume something is wrong with you. You may simply be carrying more than your nervous system was ever meant to carry alone.
Your body isn't asking you to become someone new. It's inviting you back to yourself.
Back to slower mornings.
Back to healthier rhythms.
Back to nourishment instead of pressure.
Back to the version of you that feels grounded, present, and fully alive.
And perhaps that's what true wellness has always been. Not chasing perfection.
But creating a healthy lifestyle that allows you to breathe a little deeper, move a little slower, and remember that you deserve the same care you so freely give to everyone else.
