How to Rediscover Your True Desires After 50: A Step-by-Step Guide

desires after 50 rediscover yourself reinvent your life Sep 15, 2025

Have you ever caught yourself wondering, “Is this all there is?” One thing I've been noticing after I turned 50 is that, it’s easy to slip into routines built around caring for others, following habits you’ve outgrown, or living on autopilot.

Somewhere along the way, your deepest desires—the ones that once lit you up—can get buried under responsibilities, caregiving (if you are there yet), or simply the passage of time.

I know this all so well, running my boutique coaching business, caregiving to my mother-in-law who has dementia, being a wife, a daughter, sister, friend, and a wife.

Somedays, I don't know if I'm coming our going.

But here’s the beautiful truth that I've learned: your 50s and beyond can be the most liberating years of your life. This is the perfect season to rediscover yourself, reconnect with your true desires, and reinvent your life with intention.

That’s where Desire Mapping comes in—a gentle, yet powerful process of uncovering what you truly want and designing your life around those desires. In this guide, I’ll walk you step by step through how to tap back into your inner compass and create a life that feels authentic, joyful, and deeply fulfilling.

Are you ready?

STOP... reading and go get your journal now

Chic Tip #1: The first step in rediscovering your true desires after 50 is giving yourself permission to Pause & Acknowledge Where You Are

Many women I talk to feel like they’ve been living on autopilot for years—raising families, building careers, caring for aging parents. While all of that matters, it’s not the sum of who you are.

Here’s what I like to do: set aside 15–20 minutes, make a cup of tea, light a candle, and just breathe. No distractions. Grab a Journal right now!

Ask yourself: “How am I really feeling about my life right now?” Write down whatever comes up. No censoring. This isn’t about fixing anything yet—it’s simply about awareness.

So before you dive into what’s next, take a moment to simply acknowledge where you are right now. Journaling can help:

  • How do you feel in this season of life?

  • What parts of your daily routine drain you?

  • What sparks joy or feels nourishing?

Rediscovering yourself starts with honoring where you are, even if it feels messy or uncertain. Awareness is the doorway to change. You can’t reinvent your life if you don’t first get honest about what feels misaligned today.

Chic Tip #2: Revisit the desires you once had since desires aren’t just mental—they live in your body.

Often, we override them with logic, to-do lists, or “should.” The art of rediscovering yourself after 50 is about listening to the subtle cues your body and emotions give you.

Here’s a simple practice:

  • Place a hand over your heart or belly.

  • Ask yourself, “What do I desire today?”

  • Notice what comes up—whether it’s rest, beauty, connection, or adventure.

This may seem small, but over time you’ll start recognizing patterns in your longings. These are the seeds of your true desires.

Think back to the woman you were in your 20s, 30s, or even 40s. What lit you up back then? Did you dream of traveling? Writing a book? Dancing in the kitchen just because it made you feel alive?

THE SECRT KEY: So often, the things we once loved are still within us—they’ve just been buried under responsibilities and expectations. Flip through old journals, photo albums, or even playlists. Let those past versions of you remind you of what once mattered.

This isn’t about living in the past—it’s about gathering clues for who you are now and who you’re becoming.

Chic Tip # 3: Release old stories and beliefs by the time you reach midlife, you’ve often collected beliefs that no longer serve you:

  • “It’s too late for me.”

  • “I should be grateful with what I have.”

  • “Reinvention is for younger women.”

These are lies that keep you stuck. To rediscover yourself, you must lovingly release the weight of these old stories.

I always write down questions that would stir up insight. So try writing them down and asking: Is this belief true? Where did I learn it? Do I want to carry it into the next chapter of my life?

The act of questioning loosens their grip.

Now comes the soul work. Grab the same journal and ask yourself 4 questions like:

  • ✅ What do I truly crave in this season of life?

✅ Where do I feel most alive, most “me”?

✅ What am I no longer willing to tolerate?

    ✅ If I weren’t afraid, what would I try?

Be honest. This is for your eyes only. Sometimes the answers will surprise you. Sometimes they’ll scare you.

Both are good signs—you’re getting closer to your truth.

Chic Tip #4: Clarify how you want to feel & listen to your body’s wisdom is less about what you want and more about how you want to feel

Using my strategy Desire Mapping f or example, you may think you desire a new career, but what you really crave is freedom, creativity, or confidence. Once you know the feeling you’re after, you can find multiple paths to experience it.

Create a short list of your top desired feelings—maybe peaceful, radiant, connected, adventurous, or creative. These will become your compass for every decision moving forward.

Here’s something I’ve learned: your body never lies. When you’re moving toward something that aligns with your true desires, your body feels open, expansive, and energized.

When you’re moving away from yourself, your body feels tight, heavy, and drained.

The next time you make a decision—or even imagine a new possibility—pay attention to how your body responds.

That gut feeling?

That flutter of excitement?

That sigh of relief?

Those are your compass points.

Chic Tip # 5: Dream without limits, once you’ve started reconnecting with yourself, give yourself permission to dream without editing.

This is the fun part. Pretend money, age, or circumstances don’t matter for a moment. What would you create? Where would you go? Who would you become?

Write a “desire list” of 25 things, big or small. It could be as simple as painting your bedroom a color you love or as bold as moving to another country. Don’t judge or rank them. Just let them flow out of you.

When we rediscover ourselves after 50, dreaming without limits is the first step to reinventing our lives. ♥️

Now, let’s bring those desires to life. One of the most powerful exercises for reinventing your life after 50 is imagining your ideal day. Not a dream vacation, but a regular Tuesday (pick your day) that feels aligned.

Ask yourself:

  • What time do I wake up?

  • What’s my morning ritual?

  • How do I nourish my body?

  • Who do I connect with?

  • What kind of work, hobbies, or creative projects fill my time?

  • How do I end my day?

As you write, let your desires—not obligations—shape your vision. This becomes a practical map for how to begin aligning your daily life with what you truly want.

Step 6: Choose one desire to act on, gentle, aligned action choose one thing from your list that excites you and feels doable right now.

Rediscovering your desires is powerful, but it’s the small, consistent actions that create transformation. Choose one desire and ask: What’s the smallest step I can take this week to honor this?

Here are my favorite examples 🙂:

  • If you desire more creativity, sign up for an art class.

  • If you crave connection, reach out to an old friend.

  • If you long for peace, schedule a morning walk without your phone.

Tiny steps compound into profound shifts.

Here’s where so many women get stuck—they stay in the dreaming stage. But rediscovering yourself isn’t just about knowing your desires; it’s about acting on them.

Maybe it’s signing up for a French class, starting a morning ritual, or planning a weekend getaway. Take one small step.

Every step you take builds momentum. And soon, you’ll start to feel more like yourself again—the version of you who is lit up and alive.

Step 7: Give yourself permission to evolve this is where it all comes together.

This is where it all comes together. A desire map is simply a way to organize your intentions so you can live in alignment with what matters most to you.

  • Write down your top 3–5 desires for this season of life.

  • Under each desire, list 2–3 actions you can take this month to move closer to it.

  • Keep your map somewhere visible—on your desk, your fridge, or even in your phone.

When you’re faced with decisions, come back to your desire map and ask: “Does this bring me closer to the life I want to create, or further away?”

Finally, remember that rediscovering yourself isn’t a one-time event—it’s a lifelong practice. Your desires will change as you grow, and that’s a good thing. Allow yourself to update your map regularly.

This isn’t about becoming someone new—it’s about shedding the layers that aren’t you and stepping into the woman you’ve always been.

And the best part?

Finally, remember this: rediscovering yourself after 50 isn’t a one-and-done project. It’s a lifelong unfolding. Some days you’ll feel crystal clear; other days you’ll feel unsure. That’s okay.

The point isn’t to have it all figured out—it’s to keep moving closer to the woman you’re becoming.

And let me tell you something, my friend—you are not behind. You are right on time

My Final Thoughts after 50 is really about giving yourself permission—to pause, to dream, to take up space, and to live fully as you

This is your time to peel back the layers of expectation, reconnect with your body and emotions, and design a life that feels like you.

Start small. 👣

Journal.

Listen to your longings.

Take gentle steps.

With each choice, you’ll feel yourself come alive again.

So light that candle, pour that glass of wine or cup of tea, and begin. One step, one desire, one act of self-trust at a time.

Because the truth is, life after 50 isn’t about winding down—it’s just beginning in a whole new way. And you get to decide how it unfolds.
