Every living cell within the body requires water, just as it does nutrients and oxygen. Water helps to regulate bodily functions and is necessary for the removal of wastes, especially from cells via the lymphatic systems.

Other fluids such as coffee, tea, milk, fruit juices and various other liquids including carbonated beverages, do not replace water in the diet.

It flushes toxins from the vital organs, carries nutrients to cells, provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues, and eliminates waste.

As a result of not drinking enough water, many people have problems such as poor muscle tone and size, decreased digestive efficiency  and organ function, joint and muscle soreness particularly after exercise and water retention. If we don’t get enough water what happens is the body starts retaining  water to compensate for this shortage which is an internal mechanism that kicks in when your body thinks that you are trying to dehydrate it. How much liquid you consume during mealtime can have a huge influence on your digestion. It is best not to drink when eating because excessive fluids may dilute your digestive enzymes. Certain liquid such as milk and soda pop can interfere with digestion in the stomach by neutralizing the acid levels which is needed for digesting protein.

For years I drank to help chew my food, when in essence what was needed was for me to slow down and thoroughly chew my food and to stop rushing while I ate. Many people still have this habit of washing down un-chewed food with liquid.

The difference between pure water and beverages that contain water

  • beer contains alcohol

  • coffee contains adrenal-stressing caffeine

  • fruit juices contains added and natural sugars which stimulates the pancreas

  • soda contains phosphorus that pulls calcium out of the bones

Another problem is that with these beverages you loose your taste for water.

    Ahh..Thanks for reminding me that coffee has adrenal stressing caffeine in it! I love my one cup of coffee in the morning but the rest of the day it’s water, water, water. I have to thank my mom for teaching me to drink only water growing up. Now I couldn’t imagine drinking anything else!

    On average, we don’t drink enough water, that’s for sure! I like how you went through the different liquids and how they don’t compare. It actually IS possible to drink too much water. My grandma had a stroke because she had too much water in her system. As with everything, listen to your body and moderation is key. 🙂

      Thank you Lori, for pointing that out. If you have a pre-existing medical condition involving your circulatory system caution should be exercised. Often when the lymphatic system, is not functioning properly there can be complications within the body.
