Your focus this week is on self-acceptance. This weekend, I was feeling a bit nostalgic and immersed in memories. Just 3 years ago, my sweet grandmaman passed away. While I admit it was quite a traumatic experience for me at that time, self acceptance is what I carry with me now, in every part of my life.
To make sure my mother who is an only child was not feeling too overwhelmed by this day, I took my family out to dinner. It wasn’t easy finding a place since everyone’s taste is different. My taste was saying something high end with loads of flavor but in the end, I chose a small little spot in the city that they would enjoy. After-all it was about togetherness, right?
Sometimes acceptance may not come from those you love.
I was quite disappointed in the restaurant that I chose. The food was not hot as it came to the table, we were missing a few things from our meal. Great service is just something I expect and demand. Although it is not always given.
In this moment I kept reminding myself it was about family and acceptance from them that they were enjoying “us” being together. My maman was grateful for the effort of bringing us together but papa…as they say in French, non!
As I was preparing to meet up with family I knew to expect something that would not be in the form of acceptance. So, I made sure to give myself self-care the same week. What better way than engaging in gallery hopping to take your mind away from the here and now.
As you carry on life this week I want you to take with you that:
1. Holding out for acceptance from others even well-meaning family, may not happen.
2. You can’t start a new chapter if you keep re-reading your last one.
3. If you do not feel happiness from the inside, you won’t feel this with anyone.
4. Keeping yourself engaged with life’s small pleasures create memories of the heart.
5. You can fake anything, but you can’t fake self acceptance.
As you read this and you feel that you are needing acceptance, know that you only need it from yourself. I accepted that I made a bad restaurant choice but my confidence started with intention.
What I realized is that connecting with others is what makes life rich, makes us feel safe, and that we are part of something beautiful. It’s about acceptance of not changing anyone to be on your side of the fence.
