Weddings, love and marriage…three words that I cherish today. I have been so excited!!! I had to share this with you. This month I started my count down to the day that I said, “I DO 22 years ago”. There has been a lot going on this past week, in my personal life as well as my business life. My grandmother feel from her bed, don’t worry she’s okay but it scared her and me too.

What I came to realize is that in a marriage there will always be some emergency, outside the scope of the two of you.  It’s okay to shift focus once in a while. The key is to remember that when it is all over, at the end of the day it is still the two of you and no one else. The day before I celebrated my wedding anniversary, I spent the evening with friends on their anniversary. See there it’s not always about me. After the wow and disbelief wore off over how long we have been married and how young we look. The question came, “what has been our keys for a successful marriage for 22 years”?

Key no. 1, STAY IN TOUCH

white haired coupleMarriage is a bond and communication on a daily basis is very important. Everyday when my husband leaves for work, before my day gets started he never leaves without kissing me good bye. And to show my gratitude to the most wonderful man in the world, I call him every single day just to say, “Hello”. Then I proceed to ask him two silly questions:

  1. What are you doing?

  2. When are you coming home?

Marriage is a bond and communication on a daily basis is very important.

Key no. 2, Chivalry is Dead

Bighat3-viAs I sit here in reflection, my thoughts take me down a path of remembrance. He did the most gentlemen thing that one could do for a women. Sunday before the day I said, “I DO 22 years ago”, my husband did something that I have honestly taken for granted years. I really should say, before 24 years because when we were dating he always opened my door. Some of my colleagues at that time watched and remarked, “just you wait, it will stop”! Here we are 22 years later and it has never stopped.

Just when you thought chivalry was dead, he did the most gentlemen thing that one could do for a women.

Unlocked his door then ran over and opened my door.  I try not to take this act for granted but it has been such a long custom of his. I just stand at my door until he comes over and opens it. I am grateful to feel so revered and loved. Besides what kind of a man would leave his wife waiting?

When you are a Queen that feels love, you are motivated to take care of yourself and to nurture you. However, I wouldn’t wait for someone else to give me validation of how I should feel about myself. You have to find your inner DIVA.

Key No. 3, Being a romantic in little things

After so many years you almost become Siamese twins; you finish each other thoughts, know each others style and are always found at various outings together.  I remember the first time that I went shopping without my husband. I was with my best girlfriends and for most women this is a well cherished occasion.  The only think I could think of at that moment was I wish my prince was here. That was when I was a young wife, now this is no problem for me. But creating memories are priceless.

Key No. 4, What is the essence of true love?

100_0705-viMy last key which is the ultimate definition of what contributes to a Healthy Lasting marriage. In the midst of a storm find time for you. You are the QUEEN, you are the DIVA!

LOVE is long-suffering and kind. Love is NOT  jealous. Does not behave indecently, does not look for its own interests, does not become provoked. It does not keep account of the injury.

Key number 5 is a continuation of key number 4 but the words themselves are so powerful. I felt the need to make them separate. My desire is to impress upon you what true love is in a marriage. Twenty two years is a long time to be marriage, especially in this generation.

As Audrey Hepburn once said, nothing is “impossible…The word itself says, “IM-POSSIBLE”. It is hard work but the rewards have been worth the journey. Thank you for sharing my day with me.

Key No. 5,
It Bears all things, Believes all things, Hopes all things, Endures all things
