Eating Lunch At Your Desk Bad For Productivity

Eating lunch at your desk and Multitasking seems to be synonymous these days.

Do you ever feel that you get a lot accomplished? The truth is you get less done.

Which is why in this video I’m going to share 3 reasons why eating lunch at your desk is bad for productivity and your health.

1. Overeating leads to fatigue

If you are tired the midpoint of your day, that will set your body up for failure before your day is over.

Here is how it goes: you didn’t get up early enough, you woke up too early but you’re not prepared.

Since you have so much to do with email, conference calls, meetings, clients dinners, team meetings and deadlines to meet.

The only choice you have is to eat order out and eat at your desk.

When you eat in a certain way that includes multitasking, not being present, nor focused on your body, this leads to fatigue.

It takes 20 minutes for your body to communicate to your brain that you are satiated.

If you miss this sign… you experience:

  • low productivity

  • moments of fatigue

  • overeating

  • weight gain

  • digestive issues

2. Increased Tension Headache

The longer you put off eating the higher you increase your chances of having a headache or a migraine. If you sit for long periods staring at your screen, meeting deadlines, or running reports all of this will take a toll on your body.

If you don’t shut down for lunch, your body will shut you down.

3. Diminishes Quality Sleep

Working long hours and eating at your desk forces your productivity level to drop.

When productivity levels drop, you:

  • make the wrong food choices

  • hanging out by the vending machine

  • eating overly salted cafeteria food

  • pick up food that’s quickly made

  • last choice resort is to takeout food

Your brain and body can’t shut down so you can get a restful sleep.

More hours work plus a racing mind equals less quality sleep, more stress, not able to shut off and less productivity.

To ensure you remain productive throughout the day:

  • take lunch elsewhere

  • stop checking email

  • not working on projects

  • no texting on lunch

Working and eating give you the same high flight or fight energy.

Too much multitasking -> exhausting -> inefficient -> highly stressful.

In addition, give yourself permission to let go and give full attention to your body.
